Dirty air filters force your heat pump to work in overdrive to move air through your air conditioning system, which will eventually become too much of a strain and will lead to malfunctions. A clogged air filter is also a potential safety hazard. Over time, the strain on your cooling and heating system produces higher levels of carbon monoxide, which is dangerous or even deadly.

While refrigerant issues may not be emergencies, they are still troublesome for your system. Refrigerant pulls heat out of the air, and if your lines are leaking or if your levels get too low, your system will not be able to cool down your air effectively. Warm air will start to flow from your vents as a result.
